Animal Make-Over

Client: Scuola Internazionale di Comics, Torino (Italy)

Date: May 2015

The exercise here was to take the body structures of two birds, two dogs, two cats, two humans and then use it to create a different character entirely. I chose Orville from ‘The Rescuers’, Archimedes from ‘The Sword in the Stone’, Jenna from ‘Balto’, Dodger from ‘Oliver and Company’, Marie from ‘The Aristocats’, Rajah from ‘Aladdin’, Princess Kida from ‘Atlantis’ and Tarzan from, well, ‘Tarzan’.

For the human structures I then combined them with animal traits to make sort of supernatural creatures.

Antropomorphic Animal Anatomy (Also Called AAA)

There are different types of anthropomorphic animals: from figures that are basically animals but have details which are human (Jago’s wings in ‘Aladdin’ become hands when he wishes) to figures that are definitely people but have animal faces (like all the characters from ‘Robin Hood’). Here I have tried to practice drawing these characters from different cartoons like: ‘Aladdin’, ‘Brisby and the Secret of NIHM’, ‘Robin Hood’, ‘Rango’ and some really weird Italian spin-off of the Mickey Mouse universe.

Here’s a wide variety of studies and sketches of animals taken from various cartoons – I think I’m starting to understand the importance of structures and basic shapes underneath complex figures!

The art of clean-up

Client: Scuola Internazionale di Comics, Torino (Italy)

Date: March 2015 – ongoing

For some ‘cleaning-up’ may be just a way of saying ‘tracing’ a drawing, but the International School of Comics I’ve learnt that to do a good clean-up is actually  a very difficult task! It’s all about the freshness of your touch and the ability to keep a drawing smooth and vivid with a single, precise line. That is a lot, believe me. In sketches, the use of a coloured pencil and the multiple lines help the figure come to life, when the drawing is cleaned-up it’s very easy for it to become a bit more static.

My goal over the past few months has been keeping my characters fresh and clean, I think I have improved, but I still need to do some work! Keep up the good work.

Character design – Miscellaneous

Client: Scuola Internazionale di Comics, Torino (Italy)

Date: January 2015 – ongoing

These are just some of the sketched and cleaned up character designs I have made over the past few months, attending the International School of Comics in Turin. Some of the characters are my own, whilst others have been commissioned to me.

Overall, I believe the secret behind a good technique is just to draw, draw, draw – which is what I’ve done for about five months! I have acquainted myself with a range of different drawing styles (from Disney, to manga, to a simpler, more ‘cartoony’, type of character) and I think I have definitely improved in terms of composition, freshness and flow. This said, I’m still eager to learn and, goes without saying, keep drawing!

Wonder Web! La app per capire il web.

Client: Centro Psicologia e Nuove Tecnologie ONLUS

Date: April 2015

Wonder Web! is an app for parents who find themselves at odds with their children’s online life and don’t really know how to deal with it.

This is the video we shot and edited to explain exactly the reasons why such an app is needed and how it works. The app is currently undergoing funding and will soon be developed.

Unfortunately the video is in Italian, but the images are rather self-explicative I think!

A big thanks to my partners in crime Sara Gentilini (art director) and Federico Malandrino (sound editor).

Wonder Web! is an app for parents who find themselves at odds with their children’s online life and don’t really know how to deal with it. Unfortunately I can’t really say more about it as the app is currently being developed, but I will update this post with info on where to find it and download it as soon as it’s done. Of course I would say so, since I designed it, but I think it’s a much needed tool in a changing world.
